Home remedies to relieve menstrual pains
It is a struggle when our bodies are at a discomfort because of menstrual cramps. We, sometimes, take pills to overcome this pain. However, these pills can harm our bodies negatively over time.
There are many home remedies that are much safer (and cheaper!) that we can apply to ease these painful, monthly visits.
Here are 3 useful tips from CRIMSON RED’s staff on getting fast relief and learning how to potentially lessen the pain during your next cycle.
1)Applying Heat
Applying heat to your abdomen and lower back can relieve pain. A 2012 study found that 147 women, between the ages 18 to 30, use heat patch at 40°C to relieve cramps to be as effective as ibuprofen.
If you don’t have a heating pad, taking a warm bath or using a hot towel is equally as effective.
You can also DIY your own heating pad through these simple 5 steps:
- Cut and sew together two pieces of fabric, leaving a hole at the top.
- Fill with uncooked rice and sew up the hole.
- Microwave for a few minutes to the desired temperature. Remember to not overheat for safety!
- Let cool the heating pad for a few seconds before applying to the abdomen.
- Reuse whenever necessary!
2) Avoiding certain food
During menstruation, it is ideal to avoid foods that cause bloating and water retention. Food that causes bloating and water retention include fast food, carbonated drinks, caffeine, and alcohol.
It is recommended to try soothing (caffeine-free) teas and drink lots of water. Fruits like strawberries, bananas, and papayas are packed with antioxidants and having lots of vegetables and wholegrains in your diet also help to reduce pains too!
3) Exercises
Non-strenuous exercises, like walking and stretching, are another pain-relief alternatives to relieve cramps. Yoga is also another great option to release endorphins, which can prevent and reduce menstrual symptoms. Studies shown that doing yoga can help reduce the intensity and duration of period pain among young women aged 18-22.
